Anton Schwartz began his discography as leader with an album demonstrating his versatility in styles, tempos, arrangements, and compositions and followed that with an issue that focused on tone and improvisation through more consistent, slower tempos of works mainly by other composers. This 2006 album is dedicated to the structure of blues, its 12 measures and chord sequence, if not the more familiar emotion. This time he has a quintet with added guitar of Peter Bernstein and the piano of another young maven, Taylor Eigsti. John Shifflett remains on bass but Tim Bulkley now is at the drums. With the exception of one piece by Jobim, Schwartz composed and arranged all the works. Once again, Bud Spangler is co-producer. The music is bright, bouncing between the edges of rock and soul but staying true. Its leading piece, a dance, makes its blues roots translucent and its jazz solid. Followed by a funky strutting alligator musical metaphor, with wailing saxophone and hot piano keys, the album next grabs a Brazilian Wave. Bossa blues? Slightly Off Course is not a commentary on the previous tune but a diversion in time signature with an angular melody. A sense of joy and satisfaction along with a touch of bittersweet sadness comes in Life & Times: amazingly powerful writing and group performance. Later, we find a piece named after the French mime, Marcel Marceau. A track of silence? No. Instead it honors the precise flow of the art, the surprising humor, the dance of recognition. Blues for Now is straight ahead, wide open blues, while Groundsurge is a complex, driving jazz piece. Hooking Up is another jazz blues full of excitement, and Bernstein stretches followed by bass solo. The last track, Sneaking Suspicion, is taken slow and stately. Its blues are rich and deep. Thus, 10 years ago, Anton Schwartz reached artistic maturity in this well-conceived, splendidly composed and arranged, confidently performed, and thoroughtly satisfying album.
